Cley Swallows

Was at Cley, and took some photos.  Spent more time smiling at Swallows than taking pictures.  After all this dullness and delayed sun, their very presence is sublime.

There may be others added to this, but for now this will do...

Two Shrikes, one site. Really?

Oh yes, that is correct.  Two shrikes at the one spot. Twitching my way - a little walk and two belting birds.

Lowestoft was the destination today as it had this Shrike double on the menu - a stunning male Red-backed and just for good measure a Woodchat a little further on.

Following on from a Buzzard over the garden in the morning (garden mega) it was, all in all, a very satisfactory ornithological Sunday.

Just because...

I was looking for an excuse to put a picture of a Blue Tit up, and didn't find one.  Excuse that is.  So I've posted this just because I can.

Cockney gull

Took some photos of gulls the other day including this gull had a proper ring on it (not some silly elastic band).  The ring reads HW7T, and I initially thought that it may have been of German origin.  However, I contacted some people who circulated the info amongst themselves.  After a short time they came back to me regarding said birds provenance, and it turns out that this gull is a bleedin' cockney, innit!

A gull doing the Lambeth Walk.

The gull was ringed (rung?  rang?) in Rainham in 2012 and has been seen in Norfolk before. All the information regarding the gull can be seen on this link on the North Thames Gull Group site  - which I have to say is pretty cool.  Even cooler when they put my picture up on their website.

That, dear reader, is science!

What are you doing?

I saw this gull the other day and it kept doing this weird thing.  It was twisting it's head round and looking up while its head was upside down, if that makes sense, which didn't make sense because it could have just looked up, if it wanted to look up, if you see what I mean.  And yes, that wasn't a very good sentence. It may have been trying to get rid of salty water or something similar as one of the photos has some trails of liquid around when the head was moved back.  Nonetheless, this is a rushed shot which sort of shows what it was doing.

Meadow Pipit in flight

Spent some time with a couple of skulking Meadow Pipits today, the shots on the ground are ok, but every one of them has some inconvenient vegetation in the shot.  Might be able to salvage a couple of them though/  One of them did that flying thing but then the light was at the wrong angle, the shutter speed wrong and arguably the ISO setting was wrong.  I know, excuses excuses...
